The wallpapers calendar series will not be discontinued. Next month is the last month in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. In February, you’ll have one last chance to showcase your work by designing a desktop wallpaper calendar for Smashing Magazine. But don’t worry, we have a number of new contests coming up, so it will be worth staying in touch!
Wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use one wallpaper for a long time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration from it. That’s why we decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers to cover 12 months. And to make them a little more distinctive than the usual fare, we decided to embed calendars for each month. If you need to look up a date, isn’t it better to show off nice wallpaper with a nice calendar, instead of launching your default time application?
This post features 70 (!) free desktop wallpapers for February 2009, created by designers across the globe. Every wallpaper can be downloaded for free and comes in two versions: one with a calendar and one without.
Please note:
- All images are linked to a preview of the wallpaper.
- You can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to feature on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
This month, we’ve been literally smashed by the explosion of your desktop wallpaper calendars. So look out, February 2009, we’re coming!
Moon Dreams
“Here is my moon schedule calendar for February 2009. A moon phase for every day, because since ancient times people have always known about the moon cycle and how it affects human behavior. When the moon is full or new, people can be extremely sensitive and show some big changes in their mood and behavior. That is why I wanted to create something fun and useful at the same time. I called it “Moon Dreams.’” Designed by Yana Foltice.

Minimal Month
“Minimal calendar for the month of February 2009, to be used for 28 days only.” Designed by Tom Johnson of England.
The Shortest Month
“February is the shortest month of the year, so why not line ‘em up and show that, using colors to represent the months and some simple typography to get the whole point across. Look out for the 14th, folks.” Designed by Liam J Moore.

Face Your Fading World
“‘Face Your Fading World’ features the world falling apart and floating away, back to where it came from, outer space! The illustration was created from photos that were heavily manipulated in various ways. Let us all take an extra lover on Valentine’s Day (and beyond): our planet :)” Designed by Sietse Visser of The Netherlands.

Fuck Mac
“Here is my contribution to the wallpaper/calendar collection. I got inspired by a piece of work of Alexander Kaiser. I thougt it was really funny, so I followed his idea, and, well, this is what came out. I’m planning to do a whole series of these wallpapers, so expect more in future. The wallpaper itself is quite simple. For those of you who don’t know what the red thingy is, go to Amazon (or any other store) and purchase the DVD of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.” Designed by Tim Jäger of Munich, Germany.

“The design is inspired by the lunar cycle and the fact that February is the only month that can pass without a full moon. This year, however, we do have one, and it appears on February 9th, which I have indicated in the design. Keep a look-out.” Designed by Mark Kirwan of England.

The Trees
“By showing the man in the form of a tree, I want to show that trees have lives just like us. I want to send the message that human beings should stop ‘murdering’ trees, because at the end of the day, by taking away the precious lives of these trees, human beings themselves are going to pay the price. In fact, we should appreciate the lives of these trees because they give our life to us.” Designed by Kasra Safavinia of Germany.

“My work is of a heart, just because February is the month of the lovers. I used a bar code because it identifies things, and I mixed both to represent love and its identification. I used stars with light to represent the magic that love is.” Designed by Ana Fernandes of Castelo Branco, Portugal.

Not Happy Valentine
“‘Not Happy Valentine’ is the downside of the February 14, when everything is hearts and love. Unfortunately, that day is painful for many people because of the trade. I recalled the frantic search for her elsewhere.” Designed by Diego of Argentina.
Scratchy Desk
“By trade I do 3D animation, but I have a traditional 2D background, and I know good art comes from fresh ideas. I wanted to do something different with this piece and do some digital graffiti on a wooden desktop. I set about trying to make my love-filled doodles and text-scratchy goodness look like it was done either with blue biro, red biro or plain scratches. I would love to make an animation out of this!” Designed by Daniel Sweeney of England.
