Well Known & Simple Providers

If you don’t have an OpenID yet, here are a few which are generally recommended by various members of the community. In the end you should choose a Provider from a company which you trust. We realize this list isn’t perfect and plan to evolve it into a more useful tool. If you’re curious about the technology behind various providers, you can look at a guide comparing provider feature sets.

  • myID.net

Free OpenID Provider with support for groups and Korean language.

  • myVidoop

Free OpenID Provider that eliminates passwords with security features, customization, and browser integration.

All Providers

For a list of more OpenID Providers, check the list on the wiki. We don’t make any guarantees about the providers listed, though most are quite good.

Roll Your Own

Of course, you can always use your own URI, blog URL, website, etc as your OpenID. Delegation is the simplest way to get up and running with OpenID and Sam Ruby wrote a great tutorial. Delegation requires nothing more than an OpenID Provider and some basic HTML. If you’re wanting to host your own OpenID Provider, you’ll also need some coding experience. phpMyID is a simple open source PHP script that lets you fully host your own Provider. If you’re wanting to do something more complex, check out our page on OpenID for Developers.

Yahoo! Buzz is now open for everybody!

Yahoo! Buzz is now open for everybody!

It’s been about six months since Yahoo Buzz launched and now Yahoo has decided to “open-up” Buzz. The Yahoo Buzz is similar to Digg, in which users can vote popular Internet news stories up and down.

yahoo buzz, yahoo!, buzz

When a story got so much buzz, it will be reached the Yahoo! homepage! This is good news for publishers because those who have already experienced a “Yahoo! Buzz Effect” have talked about the surge in traffic they experienced once Yahoo placed an article on their homepage.

  • Salon got so excited when they had 1 million unique visitors a day, the most ever to the 12 year old site.
  • US Magazine was linked from Yahoo on February 27, and had the second highest traffic day ever. 32% of visits that day came from the Yahoo home page.
  • Huffington Post reported 800,000 unique visitors from a Yahoo-linked story
  • Smoking Gun, Portfolio.com, Dallas Morning News and Imaginova all reported significant traffic increases after links from the Yahoo home page.
  • Sugar, Inc. sites have had nearly 1.8 million unique visitors sent from five different Buzz stories on the Yahoo home page

Content that people can Buzz up! include stories, photos, and video. You just have to look for sites that include the Buzz Up button or submit the stories here once it goes live in a few hours.

Export Files from Google Page Creator

Export Files from Google Page Creator

You probably heard that Google intends to close Google Page Creator and migrate the users to Google Sites, a service that seems to be targeted to a different audience and that lacks many features available in Page Creator. Google Sites will add some of the missing features by the time Google closes Page Creator, but those who want to move to a different service or maybe to buy a domain can already export the files.

Requirement #1. There are three kinds of files that are trapped inside Page Creator: uploaded files and web pages created using the editor which can be public or unpublished. The following exporting tool can only work for uploaded files and the public web pages. If you have pages that are unpublished and you want to export them, click on "Publish all changes" in the sidebar. You can undo this action later.

Requirement #2. Another prerequisite for the exporting tool is a software that downloads all the files linked from a page. For Internet Explorer, try the excellent download manager FlashGet (I use the classic version). For Firefox, there's an extension called DownThemAll that has some of the features from FlashGet. In both cases, you'll have to restart the browser before continuing. As usually, Opera users don't need third-party software for advanced features: there's a sidebar panel that shows all the links from a page.

Requirement #3. If you read this in a feed reader, visit the site to view the exporting form.

How to export the files.

All sites from Google Page Creator have a sitemap that lists all the public files from a site: it's available at SITENAME.googlepages.com/sitemap.xml. Just go to your site's homepage and add /sitemap.xml in the address bar. To copy the content of the XML file in the box below, you could right-click, select "view source" and copy the code (for Firefox, Opera) or open the file http://SITENAME.googlepages.com/sitemap.xml in Notepad.

After clicking on "Obtain URLs", you should see a pop-up window that lists all the files from your Page Creator site. Right-click inside the page and select "Download all by Flashget" or "DownThemAll!", depending on your browser. Make sure to check "All files" in DownThemAll and to choose a folder where the files will be copied. In Opera, press F4, click on the "Links" panel, select all the links using Ctrl-A and click on "Save to Download Folder".

Unfortunately, there's still some manual editing you need to do for the pages created using the editor: replace and similar code with .

Two free alternatives to Page Creator are Weebly and Synthasite. Wall Street Journal has an article that explains how to buy a domain and host a site without paying too much.

Will Horizontal Layouts Return?

Will Horizontal Layouts Return?

By Edison Morais

In the 90s, as the Web was just starting to take off, designers used horizontal layouts — rather in an experimental way, just to give users and designers an idea of what HTML was actually capable of. From the usability perspective it was horrible — sites were hard to scroll and the content was hard to read.

After horizontal approach has lost its novelty, it was quickly discarded and widely rejected. Surprisingly it seems to get back on track. The horizontal scroll is gaining forces and it’s not that horrible this time. Why? Simply because we have a new generation of computer devices, such as mice with a 4-way scrolling wheel and widescreen monitors. We have a lot of space area and we have an efficent and user-friendly way to navigate horizontally.

Here are good examples of horizontal layout navigation used in modern web-applications.

Plurk

A micro blogging platform Plurk displays plurks (posts) in a timeline view that makes it easier for users to relate the data to some specific time. Plurks (positioned horizontally) can be easily distinguished from comments (positioned vertically). You can navigate via keyboard arrows or using a usual mouse wheel: when you scroll vertically, the page will be scrolled horizontally.

Piclens

PicLens, a popular Firefox plugin that offers a 3D experience for photos and videos, uses horizontal approach for the primary navigation. As the users scroll, images (displayed on a horizontal wall) flow in front of users’ eyes.

Piclens

It seems that horizontal approach is currently used primarily for visualization purposes, but it can be used for “normal” designs too. Will we see this approach more often in the future? Can you imagine further situations in which you would use horizontal layout for your projects? Share your thoughts in the comments!
