2009 wallpapers Calender

The wallpapers calendar series will not be discontinued. Next month is the last month in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. In February, you’ll have one last chance to showcase your work by designing a desktop wallpaper calendar for Smashing Magazine. But don’t worry, we have a number of new contests coming up, so it will be worth staying in touch!

Wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use one wallpaper for a long time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration from it. That’s why we decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers to cover 12 months. And to make them a little more distinctive than the usual fare, we decided to embed calendars for each month. If you need to look up a date, isn’t it better to show off nice wallpaper with a nice calendar, instead of launching your default time application?

This post features 70 (!) free desktop wallpapers for February 2009, created by designers across the globe. Every wallpaper can be downloaded for free and comes in two versions: one with a calendar and one without.

Please note:

  • All images are linked to a preview of the wallpaper.
  • You can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to feature on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

This month, we’ve been literally smashed by the explosion of your desktop wallpaper calendars. So look out, February 2009, we’re coming!

Moon Dreams

“Here is my moon schedule calendar for February 2009. A moon phase for every day, because since ancient times people have always known about the moon cycle and how it affects human behavior. When the moon is full or new, people can be extremely sensitive and show some big changes in their mood and behavior. That is why I wanted to create something fun and useful at the same time. I called it “Moon Dreams.’” Designed by Yana Foltice.

Love Hurts

“The motivation for this is the moment one realizes that love’s prison has no other escape than pain. Does that sound like I think love stinks? Good… it does.” Designed by Don Giannatti of Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

Simply Gorgeous

“Rather than taking the clichéd route of a Valentine’s Day theme, I went with something a bit more different. My original intent was to show something unique but bring in some colors that reflected the romantic essence of February. Kudos to artists like Chuck Anderson and Pete Harrison for the continued inspiration.” Designed by Umer Tahir of Calgary, Canada.

Smashing Wallpaper - february 09

River Dawn

“My entry is a photograph of the River Adur, near my home, and was taken just after dawn in the middle of winter. I love the blue and orange contrasting colors, and having it on my desktop in the warm reminds me to acclimatize my cameras to the cold before I venture outside.” Designed by Irving Bartlett of United Kingdom.

I Love You More than My Laptop

“February is hearts month, and in celebrating upcoming Valentine’s Day, I came up with a theme with my own Mascot telling someone that ‘I love you more than my laptop.’ Am I sweet? :)” Designed by Ronald Bien Punla of Philippines.

Winter Bug 2009

Smashing Wallpaper - february 09

Purification

Simple, Clear and Cold

“A bit of Swiss-style graphic design here. Simple, clear and cold. This one is pretty pointless without all the numbers (2, 9), so the version without the calendar is not provided. Sorry for that.” Designed by Serhiy of Ukraine.

Winter Sun

“On one of my trips back home to southern Germany I was out in the countryside on a beautiful sunny late winter day. The landscape was just magnificent, with the sparkling snow in the mid-day sun. I took the picture with my digital camera when the horse appeared because it really shows how small we are in proportion to these majestic mountains. From the picture, I created the artwork for the desktop. Hope you all enjoy! ” Designed by Brigitte DiBenedetto of USA and Germany.

Rosso Alfa

“This is our proposal for the February desktop calendar. It is photography-based and features a superb red Alfa GTV on a beautiful sightseeing trip of Brasov, Romania. The motivation behind the design is in fact the birth of the Romanian Alfa Club Association, which was celebrated by a printed wall calendar featuring the most import cars from the community. Every month, we decided to also do a digital version of the calendar.” Designed by Stroe Alexandru and Marius Dumitru from Romania.

I think your southern-hemisphere readers will feel at home with my summer wallpaper calendar.” Designed by Heldrik Lynch of Perú.

Tormentas

“I often look at Creative Commons images on Flickr for inspiration. These two (tormentas de verano and a woman, a boy, and a toy monkey) were two I was playing with and suddenly thought of combining. I always like adding a little color to black amp, white or sepia, and I also try to find interesting color combinations. ” Designed by Seth Nickeson of the USA.

Fractal February

“This abstract piece of art was created using a single shape, a triangle. If you look close enough, you’ll notice that everything is made up of the same triangle, though in different sizes and orientations (this is called fractal art). The main motivation was to see that how a single simple shape like a triangle can almost magically generate beautiful-looking compositions.” Designed by Aakash Goel of India.

Mesmerize

“This image is an attempt to express freedom, joy, light…” Designed by David Gheorghita of Romania.

Retro Wash

“I enjoyed your article celebrating vintage and retro design, especially Andy Gilmore’s. Smashing Wallpaper - february 09

February Love

“When people think February, a lot will think of love. I wanted to do something that would go along with that idea, and that is where I got the heart idea. I also like to work with a lot of bright colors, so I decided to use watercolor brushes and blend as many bright colors together as I could. I also highlighted the 14th in red to represent one of the most popular days in February.” Designed by Anthony Nguyen of Pennsylvania, USA.

Smashing Wallpaper - february 09

Face Your Fading World

“‘Face Your Fading World’ features the world falling apart and floating away, back to where it came from, outer space! The illustration was created from photos that were heavily manipulated in various ways. Let us all take an extra lover on Valentine’s Day (and beyond): our planet :)” Designed by Sietse Visser of The Netherlands.

Smashing Wallpaper - february 09

Fuck Mac

“Here is my contribution to the wallpaper/calendar collection. I got inspired by a piece of work of Alexander Kaiser. I thougt it was really funny, so I followed his idea, and, well, this is what came out. I’m planning to do a whole series of these wallpapers, so expect more in future. The wallpaper itself is quite simple. For those of you who don’t know what the red thingy is, go to Amazon (or any other store) and purchase the DVD of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.” Designed by Tim Jäger of Munich, Germany.

Designed by Oliver Twardowski of Bonn, Germany.

Smashing Wallpaper - february 09

Smashing Wallpaper - february 09

The Trees

“By showing the man in the form of a tree, I want to show that trees have lives just like us. I want to send the message that human beings should stop ‘murdering’ trees, because at the end of the day, by taking away the precious lives of these trees, human beings themselves are going to pay the price. In fact, we should appreciate the lives of these trees because they give our life to us.” Designed by Kasra Safavinia of Germany.

Smashing Wallpaper - february 09

Not Happy Valentine

“‘Not Happy Valentine’ is the downside of the February 14, when everything is hearts and love. Unfortunately, that day is painful for many people because of the trade. I recalled the frantic search for her elsewhere.” Designed by Diego of Argentina.

Smashing Wallpaper - february 09

Scratchy Desk

“By trade I do 3D animation, but I have a traditional 2D background, and I know good art comes from fresh ideas. I wanted to do something different with this piece and do some digital graffiti on a wooden desktop. I set about trying to make my love-filled doodles and text-scratchy goodness look like it was done either with blue biro, red biro or plain scratches. I would love to make an animation out of this!” Designed by Daniel Sweeney of England.
